Evaluation

I found this brief quite challenging, not being sure on how to tackle it, i did waste time on over thinking things and not using all my effort into the typography at first, however as soon as i got the basic idea I think then the ball started rolling. My research I kept relevant to how i could picture the posters to turn out. Because it wasn't a big event its something that happens every year and isn't used as much today, i thought to get peoples minds working and to see who is really gullible.

I think my typography has progressed through this project, however i will not stop with just the one poster I think they would fit better as a series, with slight changes according to the subject. I believe there is still plenty to do on the poster and producing others. The posters will all be A1, big, bold and striking.

Overall, I am happy with my final outcome, the poster would look great large scale. If I had managed my time slightly better I probably could have produced more posters with better quality typography, and with more tricks in, to fit the 'day' more. 

Final Poster

The final piece for one of the posters, think there could be a series of different 'April Fools', all with the same styling and fonts maybe or to suit the situation. 

I have also reversed out the typography onto the corporate colours of Burger King. not entirely sure on them, the white version seems cleaner.  The typefaces are Aachen BT  at different weights and Helvetica at different weights with kerning -40.

The text bellow the typography

The title of the brief set and the date of which it happened April Fools day. So people have to read the small print, however most people skip the small print therefore are most likely to believe the poster.

Altered the structure slightly, and kept to the block style, also the colours

to create contrast between the important text. Kept the kerning tight with most at -40, the two fonts used are Aachen BT at different weights, Helvetica with different weights.

This is the same layout however with a small illustration. Like the fact it states the obvious, thought the text looked to solid needed breaking slightly with something different. need to look at the colours again, would people read the yellow font from a few metres away?

I tried different typefaces to emphasise main words to the text, however it looks like there is too much going on your eye jumps too much.

To keep the typography styles in my head where I could take my ideas, however really like the idea of it been in the style of  a newspaper head, bold striking could be used in add shells. Found some nice ideas on how to set the typography out in 'The Best of Brochure design 11' (solid column) 

'BURGER KING'

Looking through a few classic April Fools i picked out this quote 'Burger King are to introduce the new  "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans.'

My first quick visual idea. Thought how they could be advertised and in what way would they be most effective. I think this way people would read it as a general advert and not look at the small

 print which give the 'Fool' away. 

Added the apostrophe which i chose to make them cut into the typography however, I thinks this breaks the text up too much, not looking like a solid piece. 

Research into April Fools day

#1: The Swiss Spaghetti Harvest

On 1 April 1957, the respected BBC news show Panorama announced that thanks to a very mild winter and the virtual elimination of the dreaded spaghetti weevil, Swiss farmers were enjoying a bumper spaghetti crop. It accompanied this announcement with footage of Swiss peasants pulling strands of spaghetti down from trees. Huge numbers of viewers were taken in. Many called the BBC wanting to know how they could grow their own spaghetti tree. To this the BBC diplomatically replied, "place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best." 

#3: Instant Color TV

In 1962 there was only one tv channel in Sweden, and it broadcast in black and white. But on 1 April 1962, the station's technical expert, Kjell Stensson, appeared on the news to announce that, thanks to a new technology, viewers could convert their existing sets to display color reception. All they had to do was pull a nylon stocking over their tv screen. Stensson proceeded to demonstrate the process. Thousands of people were taken in. Regular color broadcasts only commenced in Sweden on April 1, 1970. 

#8: The Left-Handed Whopper

Burger King published a full page advertisement in the April 1st edition of USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.), but all the condiments were rotated 180 degrees for the benefit of their left-handed customers. The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, "many others requested their own 'right handed' version."

#10: Planetary Alignment Decreases Gravity

During an interview on BBC Radio 2, on the morning of 1 April 1976, the British astronomer Patrick Moore announced that at 9:47 AM a once-in-a-lifetime astronomical event was going to occur that listeners could experience in their very own homes. The planet Pluto would pass behind Jupiter, temporarily causing a gravitational alignment that would counteract and lessen the Earth's own gravity. Moore told his listeners that if they jumped in the air at the exact moment this planetary alignment occurred, they would experience a strange floating sensation. When 9:47 AM arrived, BBC2 began to receive hundreds of phone calls from listeners claiming to have felt the sensation. One woman even reported that she and her eleven friends had risen from their chairs and floated around the room. Moore's announcement (which, of course, was a joke) was inspired by a pseudoscientific astronomical theory that had recently been promoted in a book called The Jupiter Effect, alleging that a rare alignment of the planets was going to cause massive earthquakes and the destruction of Los Angeles in 1982. 

Change of Idea

Feel real restricted as to what I can produce to show the April 1st 1976, however the date of which Apple was first registered April 1st, April fools day has given me ideas on a completely different topic. I could still come up with an April Fools for Apple Mac, for example this April 1st come get your free Mac book, something that people could fall for and put it into context using maybe small illustrations in the text, big A1 posters, big bold, with the catch hidden within the text.  

Typography Research

Looking at a few different styles, and how typography can be used to express thoughts, statements, facts, emotion etc. Starting to think that trying to show the launch of the Apple brand could be difficult and restricting. 

Research

Researching into the brand Apple Macintosh, i found the main turning points in which the brand was recognised as a high end product and what made them the product to have. However I  was struggling to use the information and dates into something to show one day and which big event in the brand to visualise. 

A few main points from the brand:

-Established on April 1, 1976 by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne

-Apple I the first product from apple was sold as a motherboard

-Apple II April 16, 1977

-Apple III in May 1980 in an attempt to compete with IBM and Microsoft in the business and corporate computing market.

-The first Macintosh, released in 1984

-The Mac was particularly powerful in this market due to its advanced graphics capabilities

-Macintosh Portable in 1989 The Macintosh Portable was designed to be just as powerful as a desktop Macintosh, but weighed 7.5 kilograms (17 lb) with a 12-hour battery life.

Recognised Brands

Looking at different big brands looking for the major turning points, where the brands change the consumers view and opinion. 

The Subject

The Brief says it could be 'what happened through the centuries, on a specific day in the month/year' I am thinking of relating my project to something which has change through years/ centuries and has had an impact on society and consumerism. 

Maybe choose a brand or popular item to show the change in consumerism and the change through the years and how it has grown. 

Research

Unsure how to go about this project. Stared with typing into google it happened on this day and found out different events which happened on different date, mostly everything is tragic events or things that change politics and society. Like the thought of showing a change in society and effect on people and consumerism. 

Brief

'I recently discovered that i shared a birthdate with BBC broadcasting its first televised news bulletin; the Salvation Army being founded in London's East End; Spam being introduced and, not least, the birth of Dolly the Sheep. Subsequently, to find that i shared a birthday with PT Barnum, Robbie Robertson, Paul Smith, Huey Lewis and Royce da 5'9" inspired the widest range of emotion and aspiration. '


We want you to consider how best to interpret the project theme. Is it what happened through the centuries on a specific day in the month/year or could it be the story of one particular day in time? 'The Big Bang'; Battle of Hastings; the  first pulls of the Gutenberg 42-line bible; Elvis Presley on the Ed Sullivan Show; assassination of JFK; Liverpool's European Cup win in 2005 or the atrocity of 9/11.  


However fascinating the topic and the information that you select, your challenge is to create a delivery platform that demands the reader's attention. It needs to address the norms of information architecture while actively working to evoke an emotional response from the reader or viewer.
